Local Highlight - Desiderata Ranch

Berthoud Local was formed by a grassroots group of neighbors passionate about providing access to locally-produced food. By highlighting local farmers and food producers, we aim to improve the resilience and economy of the town.

What do you produce/grow?

Desiderata Ranch is a small local produce farm that grows organically, though not organic certified. Our crops vary throughout the year, with tomatoes, peppers, garlic, squash, beans, and eggplant being available in the summer.  Year round, with the help of a high tunnel, we grow lettuce, kale, chard, herbs, carrots and beets.  Currently, we are working on getting our hydroponic greenhouse up and producing and that will be a great source for a variety of greens and lettuce.  We also sell a large variety of jams and jelly and duck eggs.

History?

Founded in 1981 and is located in west Berthoud, at the border of the Boulder and Larimer Counties. Over the years it has been a cherished family home and originally had cows and horses.  In 2013, the property was destroyed by the catastrophic flooding that affected large parts of Colorado.  The home was spared but everything else was lost.  This put us in the position of needing to reinvent and pivot. It has taken many years but we have rebuilt and restored much of the farm landscape, constructed a new barn event space, built three high tunnels, cultivated a small field and opened our doors to WWOOFer's (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms).

Where can consumers get your product?

Our products are available for sale though our website at www.desiderataranch.org/shop. After orders are placed, we reach out to schedule a pick up time, and then harvest right before pick up.  Our jams and jelly are also available for sale at The Rancher's Wife in downtown Berthoud.

Favorite thing about farming/ranching:

It is a fantastic thing to know where your food comes from, how it was grown and the effort that is put into.  We eat what we grow!  There is true pleasure in knowing our community enjoys our products and feels the same way we do.

Favorite thing about Berthoud:

Berthoud is that community that cares like a small town and is resolved to retain that commitment in the face of growth.
