What do you produce / grow?
Current production is cattle, fresh eggs, tomatoes, seasonal hogs, forage wheat, grass and alfalfa hay, with buckwheat contracted.
How did you get into this business?
I started farming in high school on my own with the encouragement from my parents; I had grown cattle in 4-H and later the FFA and then got my first farm lease in 1975.
After several decades of conventional farming at the whims of big
business, in 2019 I started Los Rios Farm, LLC. Working at the restoration for years
on the Little Thompson River, it seemed an appropriate name.
A New Start: In 2020 I started using regenerative practices, or more precisely
amplified many of the regenerative practices we had used for years, but added
rotational grazing and most importantly Direct to Consumer Sales. With products
being tomatoes and many different vegetables, grass-fed beef, pasture pork and
recently free-range chicken eggs.
We encompass over 100 acres of owned ground, and well over 200 acres of leased
property with the majority irrigated.
We emphasize growing cover crops with some production grain for the birds and
hogs, with up to 37 different species planted each year and sometimes in the same
field. Rotational grazing with the beef, followed by chickens and then the pork to
help till the soil. In addition, we add worm compost tea extract with many micro-
organisms and different natural nutrient packages. Our hope is to soon start with
biochar applications.
